Pleasure Palaces by Errors

Errors, a four piece from Glasgow, have been making dancey-electronic-post-rock-experimental music since 2004. They’ve released two rather good albums since being signed to Rock Action by label founders Mogwai.

Pleasure Palaces is the first single from their upcoming album, ‘Have Some Faith in Magic.’ Think HEALTH plus (old) M83, and multiply by Telefon Tel Aviv for a rough idea. Have a listen, and enjoy the delightfully confusing video after the break.

Have Some Faith in Magic is released 30th January. It’s also streamable on Drowned in Sound right now.

Perimeters by Aes Dana

I first came across Perimeters sometime in the Summer of 2011, following my discovery of Solar Fields and his record label, Ultimae Records. I was just finding my feet in the ambient world, and Perimeters just didn’t stick. It didn’t provoke an emotional reaction in me either way: I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t particularly like it, either.

A few months later, after futher exploring the ambient and trance scene, I found my way back to Perimeters. This time, there was a sense of anger permeating, which I hadn’t noticed before, and given my initial ambivalence towards the album I was surprised when I found myself actually enjoying the moods put forth. The violin featured in Anthrazit, the album’s opener, is one of the most terrifying things I’ve heard recently, and the haunting melody in title-track Perimeters the second. The contrast between these downtempo soundscapes and the upbeat grooves – namely in Resin, In Between and Antimatter (Post) – creates an overall tone of disquiet. It’s in the short, restrained bursts of energy littered throughout where you find the most emotion, though; the subdued rage building up to that point threatens to erupt in violent, ordered bursts.

Perimeters is a deeply passive-aggressive album. And I love it.

Drops

Drops are a special part of electronic music. When done right, they evoke special emotions, feelings, which the track has been hinting at and building to up to that point. They’re a release of tension in composition, and often the focal point of the track, and are particularly prevalent in chart pop and club hits – sometimes being used multiple times per song – though ironically they’re worst bits to dance to; however, a song is much more special when a drop is used just once. The track is irrevocably changed, leaving you both excited for the present and longing for the previous. There’s probably something poetic about that.

Here are three of my favourites.

10 Tracks from my music library, picked by the fates, listened to by me.

1.Bob Dylan – Temporary Like Achilles

Can’t go wrong with a bit of Dylan. Slow drawling, almost country-like swing to it. It’s good, I like it, though I probably wouldn’t have picked it out as a standout track from Blonde On Blonde (slick harmonica solo, as per usual). Also, at 5 minutes in length it starts to drag on.

2.Milagres – Here To Stay

I won’t lie to you, I have no idea what this song is, but it’s pretty fun. Good driving beat and stabbing keyboards lying under big guitar sweeps. The guys voice is really good as well, along with the “ooooh”s in the background. Nice and sweet.

3.Friendly Fires – Jump In The Pool

Fun fun fun. the crazy calypso beats on the verses leading into the massive chorus with breathy vocals. Jumpy, energetic, a good song to jump around to and have a good time. Like a Brazillian carnival in your pants.

4.Kings Of Leon – Crawl

It’s pretty bad. It’s not a good song. He’s just so yelpy it’s uncomfortable to listen to and the drumming really gets on your nerves within the first 15 seconds. It feels like a bad attempt at doing a trippy rock song from the 70′s all distorted guitars and big solos.

5.Brand New – Guernica

Rolling drums with layers slowly building up above it until it all goes quiet at the bridge only for guitars, drums and vocals to all come crashing in for the chorus. Great dynamics, excellent song to be angry to.

6.The Chemical Brothers – Burst Generator

Good bit of techno right here. Quiet start, with chanting vocals coming in every so often. Gradually growing in momentum and muscle, building up until it drops in a wave of sound. As is expected from a song like this, it’s pretty long, but it’s good if you want to zone out for 7 minutes or so and just bask in the music.

7.Hoodie Allen – Look At What We Started

Hoodie Allen’s a recent love of mine. Witty lyrics with slick fast delivery, and great sampling. Plus he gives away all his songs for free.

8.Alcohol – Saturday Looks Good To Me

From the Polyvinyl 15-Year anniversary album. Nice, bubbly lo-fi pop. And saxophones, always a good addition to any song. Short little number but very beautiful.

9.Maroon 5 – Not Coming Home

From Songs About Jane, the best album Maroon 5 ever released. Recorded live, it’s sexy, but at the same time it’s all about him dumping someone. The guitars in this really give it a groove that complements the song really well.

10.Hot Chip – Wrestlers

Romantic, soft song, even if it’s called Wrestlers. Nice slow jam, with great dynamics between to the voices of the two singers. Good song, really nice melody, definitely worth a late night listen for something to relax to.

And that’s that. 10 tracks you might like to listen to. It’s all good (except maybe Kings Of Leon).
